Children's Programs

What to Expect

Langley Hill Friends Meeting welcomes all parents, youth, and children to our community with a commitment to providing a safe and supportive spiritual home. We offer:
  • Nursery 10:00 - 12:00 for children ages 3 and younger.
  • Fun with Friends gathering followed by classes for children aged 4 through 5th grade from 10:30-12:00.
  • Classes for middle and high school students 11:00-12:00.

Classes focus on educating our children and youth in Quaker faith and parctice, with an emphasis on the core Quaker values of Peace, Integrity, Simplicity, Equality, Stewardship, and Community.

Sunday Schedule for Families

10:00-10:30*:  Meeting for Worship open to children of all ages. Children aged 3 and younger may play in the nursery beginning at 10:00 if parents so choose.

10:30-11:00:  Fun with Friends for children aged 4 through Elementary School.

11:00-12:00:  Religious Education Classes for children and youth aged 4 and older.

12:00:  Parents collect children from their classrooms and nursery.

*On the second Sunday of the month, Meeting for Worship takes place from 9:30-10:30 instead of 10:00-11:00. However, the children's program timing is unchanged.

During the school year, all children (including those of nursery age) are invited to remain in meeting for the first half hour of worship.

All preschool and school aged children are supervised by trained adult volunteers whenever they are in the Meeting House away from their parent(s). We follow a safety policy designed to ensure all children are safe while at Langley Hill Friends Meeting.

Nursery Program

Nursery aged children are welcomed downstairs in the nursery any time between the beginning of meeting and its end. They may participate in the guided activity, outdoor play on the playground, and snack periods with the other children, as developmentally appropriate.

Pre-K through 5th Grade

At 10:30, an adult in the Meeting for Worship will guide the children downstairs for Fun with Friends and Religious Education Classes. These commonly include group activities, music and singing, crafts, games, outdoor play (weather permitting), and storytelling related to the values of Peace, Integrity, Simplicity, Equality, Stewardship and Community.

Middle-High (6th - 12th grades)

Older teens participate in Meeting for Worship for the full hour most Sundays. Middle and High school classes begin at 11:00, with a program guided by the interests and concerns of the youth. Our youth generally explore current or historical events as a group, and collaborate on a project for presentation to the entire Meeting annually.

As in the adult community, our youth meet monthly to consider their business on the second Sunday of each month. The Young Friends Meeting for Worship with a Concern for Business takes place in the teen room upstairs, guided by volunteer adult facilitators. These meetings help our youth become skilled in listening to others and seeking unity on their decisions. They also work to develop an understanding of the Quaker concept of servant leadership: a leader who guides, but is directed by the entire group. Often they will cooperate on fundraisers for charities or causes they find particularly worthy.
